St. Cloud State University is a four-year public university in St. Cloud, which is the county seat of Stearns County, situated in the US state of Minnesota, and the largest population center in the state's central region, having a population estimated at a number of more than 67 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census.
St. Cloud State was established in 1869, first starting as Third State Normal School, the institution adopting its current name in 1975, after being renamed twice, since opening its doors to students, being known as St. Cloud State Teachers College, between 1921 and 1957, and St. Cloud State College, between 1957 and 1975.
St. Cloud is the largest member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system, currently having an enrollment of more than 17 000 students. The university offers more than 200 undergraduate and more than 60 graduate programs of study through five colleges: G.R. Herberger College of Business, College of Education, College of Fine Arts and Humanities, College of Science and Engineering and the College of Social Sciences.
St. Cloud's athletic teams are known as the St. Cloud State Huskies, who compete in 21 sports, for both men and women, in NCAA Division II, in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, including in Division I as a member of the WCHA division, for men's and women's ice hockey. Their distinctive colors are cardinal red and black and their mascot is the Husky.
